SERSAS Spring 2022 Conference

March 25, 2022 @ 9:00 am - March 26, 2022 @ 5:00 pm

Beyond Borders: Securing African Futures

CFP: South East Regional Seminar in African Studies (SERSAS) & Southeast Africanist Network (SEAN) Annual Joint Meeting

New Dates: March 25-16, 2022 at the University of Florida

CFP Deadline now Feb. 15, 2022

Co-sponsored by the African Studies Center, UNC-Chapel Hill and the Center for African Studies, University of Florida

All too frequently security is thought of in its most enforcement–oriented forms, e.g. the policing of borders, crime prevention activities, anti-poaching operations, etc. The spring 2022 SERSAS/SEAN meeting seeks proposals for panels/papers that move beyond such limited conceptualizations to address the oft-entangled alternate forms of security and their role in Africa’s future, including but not limited to: climate security; educational security; energy security; food security; intellectual property security; land tenure security; natural resource security; and vaccine security.

The coordinators of SERSAS/SEAN cordially invite you to present your work within the wide parameters of the conference theme. Submissions from any academic discipline are welcome but must be accessible to a diverse set of participants. The spring 2022 SERSAS/SEAN Conference seeks to give faculty, independent scholars, and graduate students the opportunity to share scholarship within a collegial atmosphere. The coordinators cordially invite you to present your work within the wide parameters of the conference theme. SERSAS and SEAN pride themselves on providing an open and collegial forum for the exchange of ideas. This includes providing opportunities for advanced graduate students to present their work and to win the SERSAS Prize for the best graduate student paper. We therefore encourage graduate students and their faculty mentors to consider putting forward paper and/or panel proposals.

Pre-conference publishing workshop

African Studies Quarterly – an open-access, fully peer-reviewed multidisciplinary journal published by the University of Florida – will sponsor a pre-conference workshop for emerging scholars (doctoral candidates or doctorate awarded in past 3 years) on Friday 4 February. Participants will pre-circulate a draft article for review by other emerging scholar participants and a lead faculty critic for each paper. Each submission will then receive seminar-style discussion during the workshop session. Article drafts must be submitted for circulation by 21 January. Space is limited.

Accommodation

With support from the US Dept. of Education, UNC-Chapel Hill & UF will sponsor Friday & Saturday hotel nights for participants listed in the program. Details will follow with acceptance of panels/papers.

Deadline for conference paper/panel submissions and pre-conference workshop registration: December 17, 2021

Please send proposals of 250 words to: tleedy@ufl.edu
