Arabic ARAB 305 Advanced Arabic I
Credit Hours: 3.  Fifth semester of Arabic language instruction, comprising both Modern Standard Arabic and one spoken dialect. Coursework includes intensive reading of a variety of texts; films, oral presentations, and writing; extensive vocabulary development.

Arabic ARAB 407 Readings in Arabic I
Credit Hours: 3.  Classical and/or modern readings in Arabic and discussions in conversational Arabic, according to the students' interest.

Credit Hours: 3.  Classical and/or modern readings in Arabic and discussions in conversational Arabic, according to the students' interest.

Chichewa CHWA 401 Elementary Chichewa 1
Credit Hours: 3.  The course introduces the essential elements of the Chichewa language. Emphasis is on speaking and writing grammatically acceptable Chichewa and on aspects of central African culture.

Chichewa CHWA 402 Elementary Chichewa 2
Credit Hours: 3.  Prerequisite, CHWA 401. Emphasis is on speaking and writing grammatically acceptable Chichewa to a proficiency level that will enable the student to live among the Chichewa-speaking people of central southern Africa.

Chichewa CHWA 403 Intermediate Chichewa 3
Credit Hours: 3.  Prerequisite, CHWA 402. Continued instruction in Chichewa following the materials introduced in CHWA 401 and 402.

Lingala LGLA 401 Elementary Lingala 1
Credit Hours: 3.  Introduces the essential elements of Lingala structure and vocabulary and aspects of African cultures. Aural comprehension, reading, speaking and writing are stressed.

Lingala LGLA 402 Elementary Lingala 2
Credit Hours: 3.  Prerequisite, LGLA 101 or 401. Continues the introduction of the essential elements of Lingala structure and vocabulary and aspects of African cultures. Aural comprehension, reading, speaking and writing are stressed.

Lingala LGLA 403 Intermediate Lingala 3
Credit Hours: 3.  Prerequisites, LGLA 102 or 402. Designed to increase reading and writing skills. Introduction of literature. Aural comprehension and speaking skills stressed.

Lingala LGLA 404 Intermediate Lingala 4
Credit Hours: 3.  Prerequisites, LGLA 203 or 403. Designed to increase reading and writing skills. Introduction of more compound structures.

Portuguese PORT 203 Intermediate Portuguese I
Credit Hours: 3.  Further development of language with emphasis on speaking, writing, and a review of grammar. Includes advanced Portuguese structures, cultural and literary texts. Students may not receive credit for both PORT 203 and PORT 212 or 402. Prerequisite, PORT 102, 111, or 401. Note: This semester of Portuguese language study has a regional focus on Lusophone Africa.

Swahili SWAH 112 Intensive Kiswahili 1-2
Credit Hours: 6.  The 112 course covers the material in the SWAH I and SWAH II sequence in a single semester.

Swahili SWAH 234 Intensive Kiswahili 3-4 (on demand)
Credit Hours: 6.  Prerequisite, SWAH 112 or SWAH 402. The 234 course covers the material in the SWAH III and SWAH IV sequence in a single semester.

Swahili SWAH 403 Intermediate Kiswahili 3
Credit Hours: 3.  Third semester Kiswahili, designed to increase reading and writing skills. Introduction of literature. Aural comprehension and speaking skills stressed.

Swahili SWAH 404 Intermediate Kiswahili 4
Credit Hours: 3.  Prerequisite, SWAH 403. Fourth semester Kiswahili, designed to increase reading and writing skills. Introduction of more compound structures. Emphasis on literature, including drama, prose and poetry and creative writing. Aural comprehension and speaking skills stressed.

Swahili SWAH 405 Advanced Kiswahili 5
Credit Hours: 3.  Prerequisite, SWAH 404. This course is offered to students who have completed SWAH 404. It is taught in Swahili and aims at enabling students with grammatical and communicative competence.

Swahili SWAH 406 Advanced Kiswahili 6
Credit Hours: 3.  Prerequisite, SWAH 405. Permission of the instructor for students lacking the prerequisite. This course reinforces and expands the grammatical, cultural, and communicative competence achieved in SWAH 405.

Wolof WOLO 401 Elementary Wolof I
Credit Hours: 3.  Introduces the essential elements of Wolof structure, including present tense and commands, and vocabulary, with an emphasis on conversational skills. Also introduces the culture, artistic tradition and geography of Senegal.

Wolof WOLO 402 Elementary Wolof II
Credit Hours: 3.  Prerequisite, WOLO 101. Continues introduction of conversational skills, building vocabulary and adding verb tenses. Also introduces Senegalese cinema and theater. Prepares students to travel to Senegal and enter in-country intermediate Wolof instruction.

Wolof WOLO 403 Intermediate Wolof III
Credit Hours: 3.  Prerequisites, WOLO 101 and WOLO 102. This course continues conversational and written Wolof is especially appropriate for students planning to travel to Senegal. It will introduce students to Senegalese literature and proverbs.

Wolof WOLO 404 Intermediate Wolof IV
Credit Hours: 3.  Prerequisite, WOLO 403. Permission of the instructor for students lacking the prerequisite. This course reinforces students’ communicative and cultural skills via gradual exposure to increasingly challenging tasks. Reading poetry and prose, and introduction to creative writing will be stressed.
