This hybrid event features Dr. Louisa Lombard, in conversation with Dr. Aalyia Sadruddin.

Rwandan soldiers working as UN peacekeepers are tasked with doing whatever it takes
to protect civilians, yet without taking sides in the armed conflicts raging where they
are deployed. The soldiers experience moral conflicts as they try to align their ideals,
their hierarchical roles, and the initiative-killing machine that international
organizations can, despite themselves, become. Many are currently unsure whether it’s
better to be a good student, following the rules, or a good teacher, showing others how
things should be done but that seems to be changing.

Louisa Lombard is Associate Professor of Anthropology at Yale University, where she is
the Director of Graduate Studies for African Studies and co-convenor of the Workshop
on Political Violence and its Legacies. She is co-editor of HAU: The Journal of
Ethnographic Theory and the author of State of Rebellion: Violence and Intervention in
the Central African Republic and Hunting Game: Raiding Politics in the Central African
Republic.
