Introduction to Malawi and Chichewa: Zoom Interactive Workshop on Malawian Culture and Chichewa Language

This two-part workshop, held Saturday March 20 and March 27 from 9:30am – 11:30am, will provide a brief overview of the social, cultural and political context of Malawi with an emphasis on cultural sensitivity in health services for UNC students, staff and faculty planning research, service or internships in Malawi.  Using a mixture of panel discussions, large and small group breakout sessions, participants will explore social and behavioral, practices and norms in Malawi.

Participants will also receive:
• Introductory tips to Chichewa greetings, linguistics and elementary language construction tools
• Soft copies of workshop material including practical language tips on health and medical interview vocabulary
• Uber eats lunch vouchers 

Space is limited – please register at  http://bit.ly/CHICHEWA.  Please contact Ada Umenwaliri at email: africa@unc.edu for additional questions or concerns.  Attendance at both sessions is strongly recommended.  Priority will be given to UNC students with planned research, service or learning programs in Malawi and researchers working in Chewa speaking countries (Malawi, Zambia, etc.)    Zoom link will be  provided after registration.  This workshop is sponsored by the UNC African Studies Center,  and the UNC Institute for Global Health & Infectious Diseases.
