The Charisma Machine: The life, Death, and Legacy of One Laptop Per Child – Modernity and Technology in East Africa

October 14, 2021 @ 11:00 am - 12:30 pm

Scholars in Zoom Conversation talk on the recently published monograph, The Charisma Machine: The Life, Death, and Legacy of One Laptop per Child, By Morgan G. Ames, moderated by Shakirah Hudani. Morgan G. Ames researches the ideological origins of inequality in the technology world, with a focus on utopianism, childhood, and learning.

The Charisma Machine: The Life, Death, and Legacy of One Laptop per Child (MIT Press, 2019) is the winner of the 2020 Best Information Science Book Award and draws on archival research and ethnographic fieldwork in Paraguay to explore the cultural history, results, and legacy of the OLPC project – and what it tells us about the many other technology projects that draw on similar utopian ideals.

Morgan Ames is an Assistant Adjunct Professor in the School of Information and Interim Associate Director of Research for the Center for Science, Technology, Medicine and Society (CSTMS) at the University of California, Berkeley.

This conversation will be moderated by Prof. Shakirah Hudani. Shakirah Hudani is Assistant Professor at UNC-Chapel Hill’s Dept. of African, African American, and Diaspora Studies (AAAD) and specializes in African urbanism and post-conflict urban change.

This talk is sponsored by the UNC-Chapel Hill African Studies Center and is part of the UNC-Chapel Hill Department of African, African American and Diaspora Studies Colloquium Series.
