CALL FOR PAPERS – Submission Deadline: April 10, 2023

The African Studies Center brings together Africanist students, faculty, and staff from across the University, and it reaches out to the wider public to share research and information about Africa.

The Center solicits proposals from graduate and professional students in the Social Sciences, Fine Arts and Humanities, and Natural Sciences in the College of Arts and Sciences; from the Schools of Law, Education, Journalism, Global Public Health, Business, Nursing, Social Work, Pharmacy, Journalism and Media, Information, and Library Science, Dentistry, and Government.  In short, students from the entire campus.

Our broad disciplinary reach provides an opportunity to design presentations for diverse, knowledgeable audiences—perfect practice for the job market.

The symposium will be an in-person event.  Students who will be off-campus at the time of the event may also apply to present via Zoom (through live, not recorded, presentations).

 Presentation Guidelines:

1. 10 minutes in length, using approximately 10 slides
2. Avoid discipline-specific language, aiming instead for academic audiences outside your field (an important factor in job interviews of all kinds)
3. Communicate the significance of your research
4. Aim for engagement as well as elucidation—share your excitement about your research with the audience

 Paper Proposals:

1. Your name, email, department, and MA or Ph.D. program
2. 300-word abstract
3. 150-word bio
4. Proposals should be written toward a multidisciplinary audience; the selection committee will be composed of Africanists from a range of disciplines

Submit proposals in Word format to: africa@unc.edu. The results of the proposal review will be communicated by April 17^th.
