African Arts and Social Change: K-12 Teachers’ Workshop

How do African arts reflect, imagine, and transform African societies? This professional development workshop introduces teachers to topics such as African music, textiles, and cultural practices to examine their historical and contemporary impact. It will include a visit to the Ackland Art Museum. 0.5 CEUs will be awarded credits. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. Register here.

Workshop Schedule

9:30 am – 10 am: Breakfast and Welcome

10 am – 11 am: Teaching Through Textiles: Exploring West African History and Culture by Dr. Victoria Rovine

11:05 am – 12:05 pm: Teaching Through Art: Discussion on Swahili Culture in East Africa by Dr. Kimani Njogu.

12:05 pm – 1:05 pm: Lunch

1:10 – 2:10 pm: Session 3

2:30 – 3:30 pm : Ackland Art Museum visit

This event will be held at the FedEx Global Education Center (301 Pittsboro St. Chapel Hill, NC 27516) in Room 1005 in collaboration with UNC Carolina Public Humanities K-12
