Children's Africana Book Awards Winner 2015

Are ethnic cleansing and large-scale violence against civilians a topic that can be raised with readers between eight and twelve years of age? The Red Pencil shows that this is indeed possible. Africa Access Review has announced that The Red Pencil, written by Andrea Davis Pinkney, and illustrated by Shane Evans, is this year's winner of the Children's Africana Book Award.

Sofie in the City

Lending Library

The African Studies Center has books, films, and other materials available free of charge for K-16 educators in North Carolina to borrow. Fiction and non-fiction works, for ages kindergarten through high school are available. The ASC will cover shipping in both directions. This month we are featuring our picture book set on Country and City Life. One of the books in the set, Sofie and the City, is about a young girl who is homesick for her home country of Senegal.

Culture Kits

The ASC offers a Culture Kit on Senegal, "Daily Life in Dakar" for teachers who are looking for a way to introduce the study of West African culture and daily life. This kit features items used by families in Senegal, such as religious items, household items, and school materials, as well as background information. The Senegal kit, along with our Kenya kit and all our book sets, are available free of charge to N.C. Educators and all shipping is included.
