Swahili Courses

SWAH 112 Intensive Kiswahili 1-2 (6). The 112 course covers the material in the SWAH I and SWAH II sequence in a single semester.

SWAH 234 Intensive Kiswahili 3-4 (6). Prerequisite, SWAH 112 or SWAH 402. The 234 course covers the material in the SWAH III and SWAH IV sequence in a single semester.

SWAH 401 [001] Elementary Kiswahili I (3). This course enables students who have no previous experience in Kiswahili to develop speaking, listening and understanding, writing, and reading skills in Kiswahili. Students will also be exposed to Swahili culture.

SWAH 402 [002] Elementary Kiswahili II (3). This course is for students who have already acquired the basics of Kiswahili to reinforce their ability to learn speaking, listening and understanding, writing, and reading Kiswahili. Evidence of basic knowledge of Kiswahili is required.

SWAH 403 [003] Intermediate Kiswahili III (3). This course is intended for learners who have already acquired Kiswahili proficiency in 401 and 402. It increases communicative proficiency and language learning ability as well as proficiency in cultures of the Swahili-speaking people.

SWAH 404 [004] Intermediate Kiswahili IV (3). This course is a continuation of 403. It reinforces studentsí communicative and cultural skills via gradual exposure to more challenging tasks. Reading poetry and prose, and introduction to creative writing will be stressed.

SWAH 405 Advanced Kiswahili V (3). This course focuses on developing skills in using Kiswahili to acquire information, knowledge and think/discuss critically about the information acquired. Authentic materials related to specific fields of study constitute the core of the teaching and learning materials and activities.

SWAH 406 Advanced Kiswahili VI (3). This course is a continuation of 405. It reinforces studentsí ability to acquire information, knowledge and think/discuss critically about the information acquired, via gradual exposure to more challenging activities. Students will be exposed to more complex teaching and learning materials and activities.

SWAH 408 Swahili Languages Across the Curriculum Recitation (1). Prerequisite, SWAH 404/004 or permission of supervising faculty member. Swahili recitation offered in conjunction with selected content courses. Weekly discussion and readings in Swahili relating to attached content courses.
